Who We Are
Migraine.org was created by a group of individuals who suffer from migraine headaches, and who have discovered that the more patients know about their disease the better health care they will receive. Doctors now agree that patients should try to learn as much as possible about their medical condition - it's called being proactive about your care.
Migraine.org has one goal: to make available - in a single location - all the major news about migraine headache research.
This is an exciting time for anyone involved in migraine research, and for migraine sufferers who want to educate themselves. With development of the triptan drugs (including Amerge, Axert, Frova, Imitrex, Maxalt, and Zomig), the pharmaceutical industry has provided the first non-narcotic drugs that can stop a migraine even after it has started. As reported on the News page, one triptan drug is about to go generic, which will greatly reduce costs to patients. While the origins of migraine are still uncertain, researchers are following promising leads in several areas. Click on Research Reports for more information. A separate page is dedicated to migraine issues of particular interest to Women. While migraine.org is aimed primarily at patients, we also provide technical abstracts on major research articles on our Professionals page.
In addition to research news, this site provides essential background information, including a Migraine Overview, a guide to Treatment Options, and a list of Additional Resources. We also provide links to Clinical Trials. Basic awareness of migraine headaches is woefully inadequate, leading to needless suffering by millions of individuals. Surveys in 1989 and 1999 both indicate that about 12% of the U.S. population suffers from migraine headaches - though only 48% of those who met the clinical definition of migraine report ever having had their condition diagnosed by a physician. And despite significant advances in prescription medications, 57% of migraine sufferers rely exclusively on over-the-counter medications. This figure remained unchanged from 1989 to 1999. 1
